Risk Management in the Yucatan

by Doyice Cotten

On a recent visit to the Playa del Carmen, I noted several hazard on the sidewalks. It is a great place to visit, but you need to stay alert on the sidewalks and when you cross the street. Traffic is sometimes fast and they often do not stop for pedestrians.

You need to watch your step.  Photos 1-5 all point out the need to take care when on the sidewalks around Playa. Some are self explanatory. In Photo 2, note the guywire; in Photo 3, these bolts are at the edge of the sidewalk (I spotted a number of these around town); and in Photo 4, the unobservant pedestrian can trip on the bolts or strike the phone both projecting into the sidewalk.

I visited one municipal playground in Playa. They have some interesting climbers and other apparatus; however, Photos 6-13 show some risk management concerns.  Photos 6, 8, 9, and 10 show equipment in a state of disrepair; 6 slats on the climbing slope are missing, 8 jagged metal at the top of the slide, 9 the rope rails are broken, allowing kids to fall, and 10 shows some missing hand grips on the climbing wall.  Number 7 shows wooden swing seats and number 13 shows a chain link fence installed with the sharp points upward. The one that puzzled me most was the climbing apparatus pictured in 11 and 12. Note that on the upper level there is a ladder leading up a wooden platform supported by a rope. It looks as if  a child is intended to get on it and possible be lowered down.

In Cancun, I observed a nice playground with a nice plastic slide that was being misused. In photo 14, it is difficult to tell if it is a slide or a climber. They are having fun – but there is risk. Perhaps it is neither climber not slide – it is obvious from photo 15 that it is where one sits for a snack. The corn looked good.
