Doyice J. Cotten
Doyice J. Cotten is an emeritus professor of sport management at Georgia Southern University where he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in sport law and risk management. He manages his own writing and risk management consulting business, Sport Risk Consulting.
During his professional career, he has been active in many professional organizations in the areas of sport management and physical education. Dr. Cotten served as president of the Sport and Recreation Law Association. He also served as president of the Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation as well as the editor of the GAHPERD Journal.
Dr. Cotten speaks on legal issues at such conferences as the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), the Athletic Business Conference; the Sports Business Workshop, the International Conference on Sport Business, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), the Resort and Commercial Recreation Association (RCRA), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the National Equine Law Conference.
Doyice and Mary Cotten Dr. Cotten has published more than 150 articles on legal liability and risk management in such publications as Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, Journal of Sport Management, Sports Parks & Recreation Law Reporter, Exercise Standards and Malpractice Law Reporter, Athletic Business, and Fitness Management.
He wrote a bi-monthly column on risk management for Fitness Management for seven years. His major area of interest is in waivers and releases of liability. He has collected and analyzed about 1000 sport- and recreation-related waiver cases and has coauthored two books on the subject. They are Waivers & Releases of Liability (7th ed.) and Legal Aspects of Waivers for Sport, Recreation and Fitness Activities.
He is also the co-editor and author of Law for Recreation and Sport Managers. This popular sport law textbook is used in approximately 150 universities and is in its 4th edition.

Mary B. Cotten
Mrs. Cotten is also a former instructor at Georgia Southern University. She is an active partner in Sport Risk Consulting. She has spoken at many conferences, is involved in researching and analyzing waiver cases, and is co-author of Waivers & Releases of Liability (7th ed.) and Legal Aspects of Waivers for Sport, Recreation and Fitness Activities.
